Moses role-play - part 1 of 15

Exodus 1 to 2

re-told by Debbie Dunn

Story Highlights:

* Under threat of punishment, Hebrew slaves were forced to make bricks and work in fields in Egypt.

* Hebrew midwives refused to obey Pharaoh's order to kill all baby boys.

* Pharaoh's daughter adopted 3-month-old baby found in basket in Nile River and named him Moses.

Narrator #1: The true story about Moses began long after Jacob's family of 70 people, including his 11th son Joseph, had died. The Pharaoh — the king of Egypt — had also died.

 

Narrator #2: A new Pharaoh came into power. This new king did not know or care about all the good things Joseph had done to save people from starvation during that 7-year famine.

Narrator #1: The only concern of this new king of Egypt was that the original family of 70 had grown and multiplied with many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

 

Narrator #2: These descendants of Jacob, also known as Israel, reproduced so often that they were "extremely powerful and filled the land." [Exodus 1:7]

Narrator #1: That new king of Egypt said to his people, "Look! The people of Israel now outnumber us and are stronger than we are."

Narrator #2: He continued, "We must make a plan to keep them from growing even more. If we don't, and if war breaks out, they will join our enemies and fight against us."

Narrator #1: The king also said, "Then, these people of Israel will escape from Egypt back to their own country. To make certain they can't do this, we will force them to become our slaves!"

 

Narrator #2: That king appointed brutal slave drivers over them. They forced them to build cities. They made their lives bitter.

Narrator #1: They forced them to mix mortar and make bricks. They also had to do all the work in the fields.

 

Narrator #2: Anytime they rebelled or talked back, the slave drivers whipped them until the blood ran down their backs into the ground.

Narrator #1: Nevertheless, the Israelites multiplied and spread. The scared king and his people passed a horribly cruel law.

 

Narrator #2: He ordered the Hebrew midwives, the ones who help pregnant women give birth to their babies, to kill all the baby boys. Only the baby girls would be allowed to live.

Narrator #1: The midwives ignored this horrible new law because they did not wish for God to turn against them. The angry king called them in for questioning.

Narrator #2: The king demanded, "Why have you done this? Why have you allowed those baby boys to live?"

Narrator #1: God had given the midwives the wisdom to say these words to the angry king. They said, "The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women."

 

Narrator #2: They continued, "They are more energetic and have their babies so quickly that we cannot get there in time."

Narrator #1: So, God was good to the midwives who feared and respected His laws, and the Israelites continued to multiply, growing more and more powerful.

 

Narrator #2: Therefore, the Pharaoh encouraged all the Egyptians to "throw every newborn Hebrew boy into the Nile River. But you may let the girls live."

Narrator #1: Around that time, a man and a woman from the tribe of Levi, the descendants of Jacob's 3rd-oldest son, got married.

 

Narrator #2: Before that cruel law had passed, they already had a daughter, Miriam, and a son, Aaron.

Narrator #1: Can you imagine how scared this mother was when she gave birth to a baby boy during the time of this horrible law?

 

Narrator #2: This clever mother managed to keep the baby boy hidden for three months.

Narrator #1: To give him a chance to survive, she made a basket of papyrus reeds and waterproofed it with tar and pitch.

 

Narrator #2: The mother put the baby in that basket and laid it among the reeds along the banks of the Nile River. The basket began to float.

Narrator #1: Miriam, his brave big sister, stood at a distance, watching to see what would happen to him.

 

Narrator #2: Soon, Pharaoh's daughter and her maids came down to the river to bathe. When the princess saw that floating basket, she sent her maid to retrieve it.

Narrator #1: When the princess saw the crying baby inside, she felt sorry for him. She declared, "This must be one of the Hebrew children. Well, …, he is going to be my child now."

 

Narrator #2: When a maid asked what the princess would name him, she replied, "I will name him Moses because I lifted him out of the water."

Narrator #1: Then, Miriam came out of hiding and said, "Princess, should I go and find one of the Hebrew women to nurse that baby for you?"

 

Narrator #2: The princess of Egypt happily agreed. She even planned to pay this woman for feeding her adopted son until he was old enough to eat regular food.

Narrator #1: Excited, Miriam ran home and got her mother. And for three years, Moses' actual mother got to nurse her own child for the kind princess of Egypt.

God raised 2 men from death to life through contact with Elisha
from 2 Kings 4:8–37 & 2 Kings 13:21

• Story Highlights:
  * God allowed Elisha to raise son of an older couple back to life.
  * A dead man came back to life through contact with Elisha's bones.
  * Elisha performed twice as many miracles as Prophet Elijah did.

Last week, we heard about 2 letter-E guys who never died.

Question: Who were they?

Answer: Elijah and Enoch

We will now hear some miracle Bible tales where God allowed somebody to be raised from the dead.

Several weeks back, we had already heard the story where Prophet Elijah brought a widow’s son back to life.

    [SOURCE: 1 Kings 17:17–24]

RINGLEADER: Hooray for the widow! Hooray for Elijah!

Question: After Elijah went to Heaven by way of a whirlwind in a Chariot of Fire, who was the special prophet who took his place?

Answer: Elisha

That’s right. Elisha. God also gave Prophet Elisha the ability to raise somebody from the dead.

RINGLEADER: Who did Elisha bring back to life?

Group repeats

I’m glad you asked. You see, during the 50-plus years Elisha served God as His special prophet, he had to travel a lot.

When he came to this one special town, he always stayed at the home of an older couple with no kids.

One day, God allowed Elisha to work a miracle so that the older couple had a baby boy. Many happy years went by. That baby boy grew, and grew, and grew, until he was grown.

But, …, one sad day, he died in his mother’s arms. Determined that this would not be the end of her son’s story, she ran and ran, looking for the man of God called Elisha. When she finally found him, she told him what had happened. Elisha went to her home and prayed to Almighty God. Soon, her son sneezed 7 times and came back to life.

RINGLEADER: Hooray for God! Hooray for Elisha!

As I mentioned before, Elisha served God as His special prophet for over 50 years. We'll hear about some of his other miracles another time. But right now, I'm going to tell you the strange story of what happened with Elisha’s bones after he was dead.

RINGLEADER: Huh??? Tell us that story.

Group repeats

Okay. After serving God as a prophet for over 50 years, Elisha eventually died. They placed his body in a tomb.

A long enough time had passed that his body now looked like a skeleton.

One day, a man died. His buddies took his dead body and decided to bury him near the location of Elisha's tomb.

But, …, uh-oh! Before they were able to bury him, they looked up. Yikes! They saw a bunch of raiders from the town of Moab heading in their direction.

Quickly, they looked around. They needed to find a place to dump his body before they ran away to safety.

RINGLEADER: Did they dump him in Elisha’s tomb?

Group repeats

They sure did. They threw his dead body into Elisha’s tomb and then ran for their lives.

Picture this. The Bible states that when his body touched Elisha’s bones, the man came back to life. And he stood up on his feet.

Can you imagine how puzzled he would have been?! He probably didn’t know those bones belonged to Elisha. All he would have realized was that he had been dead, and now he was alive again.

Can you picture the surprised looks on his buddies' faces when he managed to track them down to say, “Hey, I’m alive again.”

RINGLEADER: That’s freaky but cool!

I agree. It sure was!

By the way, you might recall that before Elijah boarded the Chariot of Fire, he gave Elisha two wishes. The first wish came true for sure as Elisha served God as His special prophet for over 50 years.

Let's get Elisha to remind you of his second wish.

ELISHA: Elijah, please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.

That wish also came true because Elisha performed twice as many miracles as Prophet Elijah did. One example was that Elijah brought 1 person back to life. As for Elisha, during his lifetime, he brought 1 person back to life. After he died, somehow, that dead man miraculously came back to life by coming into contact with Elisha's bones.

Question: As a bit of a review, who were the 3 letter-E guys who either never died or had the God-given ability to raise a person back to life?

Answer: Elijah, Enoch, and Elisha.

Forbidden Fruit Results
from Genesis 3:1 to 24

• Story Highlights:
  * God issued consequences to Adam & Eve for breaking His 1 rule by eating fruit from forbidden tree.
  * God cursed the Serpent & prophesied hostility between his offspring & the offspring of the woman.
  * God provided Adam and Eve with clothes and then exiled them from the Garden of Eden forever.

SKIT: Forbidden Fruit Results for Adam, Eve, & the Serpent

Narrator #1: Oh, no!

Narrator #2: What happened?

Narrator #1: Our long-ago grandparents, Adam and Eve, made a huge mistake! The Serpent did, too!

Narrator #2: Serpent, what did you do?

























SERPENT: I, the Serpent, cleverly tricked Eve into taking a bite of the forbidden fruit growing on the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Hee-hee-hee!

Narrator #1: Eve, what did you do?

EVE: Sigh! My name is Eve. I made a horrible mistake! Instead of listening to God, I allowed that Serpent to trick me into eating the forbidden fruit. And because I didn’t want to be the only rule-breaker, I urged my husband, Adam, to also break God’s only rule. Woe is me!

ADAM: My name is Adam. I should have known better than to allow my wife, Eve, and that wily serpent to tempt me to eat that forbidden fruit. Woe is me! What will happen to us now?

Narrator #2: As you probably recall, God had given Adam only one rule to follow in the Garden of Eden. Father God said:

Father God: Adam, you must NOT eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, for when you eat from it, you will certainly die.

Narrator #1: Adam and Eve did not die; BUT, their peaceful life in this garden-paradise was soon to end.

Narrator #2: But first, let’s listen to God’s curse against the Serpent.

Father God: Serpent, because you have done this, you are cursed above all livestock and all wild animals. You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

SERPENT: Oh, no! Father God has cursed me! What else will happen to me?

Father God: Serpent, I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.

Narrator #1: Believe it or not, that curse was a prophecy about what would happen about 4,000 years later.

Narrator #2: On a Friday, Jesus was brutally tortured and crucified. Satan must have been so happy believing that he had finally managed to kill the Son of God.

Narrator #1: But, no! Jesus outwitted Satan and all those evil men. How did He do that?

Narrator #2: Jesus conquered death by rising again on the third day. Today, we call those two days Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Father God: Eve, it is your turn now. Because you sinned by eating the forbidden fruit, you will no longer be able to live this easy life in this garden.

EVE: Father God, what will happen to me, then?

Father God: I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you.

Narrator #1: Before Eve had a chance to react, Father God turned to Adam. He said:

Father God: Adam, since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat, the ground is cursed because of you.

ADAM: Father God, what does that mean exactly?

Father God: Adam, because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you. With hard labor you shall eat from it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; Yet you shall eat the plants of the field; By the sweat of your face, you shall eat bread, until you return to the ground, because from it you were taken. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.

Narrator #2: Even though God punished Adam and Eve, He still loved them deeply. To make them feel more comfortable, God gave them a gift. Our Bible verse-reader will describe this gift by sharing Genesis 3, verse 21.

Genesis 3:21 And the LORD God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife. (NLT)

Narrator #1: Please post the picture of Adam and Eve wearing clothes that God might have made from sheep skin.

ADAM: Thank you, Father God, for providing these clothes for us.

EVE: Yes, thank you, Father God. We are grateful to have clothes to wear.

Narrator #2: Father God then had a private conversation with Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Our Lord Jesus said:

JESUS: Father, Adam and Eve have already eaten the forbidden fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Now that they have sinned, how do we prevent them from living forever by eating fruit from the Tree of Life?

Father God: Jesus, you have made a valid point. The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the Tree of Life and eat, and live forever.

Narrator #1: To find out what God decided to do with Adam and Eve, let’s have our Bible verse-reader share Genesis 3, verse 23.

Genesis 3:23 Therefore the LORD God sent Adam away from the Garden of Eden, to till and cultivate the ground from which he was taken. (AMP)

Narrator #2: Being forced to leave the Garden of Eden might have been like being expelled from a beautiful garden filled with waterfalls, rivers, and an all-you-can-eat buffet to having to work and struggle on farmland filled with thorns, weeds, and bad weather.

Father God: Adam and Eve, even though you must leave the Garden of Eden forever, no matter where you live, I will always Love you and look out for you.

Narrator #1: Let’s find out how God plans to protect the garden so there is no way Adam and Eve can sneak back in.

Narrator #2: Bible reader, please end this role-play by reading Genesis 3, verse 24.

Genesis 3:24 So God drove the man out; and at the east of the Garden of Eden He [permanently] stationed the cherubim and the sword with the flashing blade which turned round and round [in every direction] to protect and guard the way (entrance, access) to the Tree of Life. (AMP)

Narrator #1: Next week, we will hear about what life was like for Adam and Eve outside the garden. We will also hear the story of the first murder that happened between their first two sons, Cain and Abel.
