Exodus 2 & Acts 7

Story Highlights:
- * Pharaoh’s daughter hired biological mother of Moses to feed him until he was weaned
- * Moses spent 1st 40 years of his life as a pampered Egyptian prince
- * Moses had to run for his life after killing Egyptian overseer who was beating a Hebrew slave
Narrator
#1: Last
week, we heard the story of a baby boy named Moses, born a Hebrew slave.
Narrator #2: His mother felt forced to keep his birth
secret as the Egyptian Pharaoh was determined to murder all the boy babies.
Narrator
#1: When
he was 3 months old, this clever Hebrew mother made a sturdy basket and floated
him down the Nile River.
Narrator #2: Why? She was hoping, somehow, her son would
be found and rescued.
Narrator
#1: Sure
enough, God made certain the daughter of the Pharaoh found the crying baby
inside that floating basket.
Narrator #2: Due to her soft heart, the Egyptian princess
decided to adopt him. She named him Moses.
Narrator
#1: God
also inspired her to hire a Hebrew woman to nurse Moses until he was probably
about 3 years old.
Narrator #2: It turns out that the woman the princess
hired was the actual Hebrew slave who had given birth to this baby.
Narrator
#1: From
that time forward, that princess raised Moses as a pampered Egyptian prince.
Narrator #2: The Bible doesn't tell us when Moses
realized he was Hebrew rather than Egyptian.
Narrator
#1: Could
his Hebrew-speaking mother have whispered this to him as a secret during their
time together?
Narrator #2: Or did Moses somehow discover this secret
when he was in his teens, twenties, or thirties?
Narrator
#1: Acts
7:22, states that "Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the
Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action."
Narrator #2: Something horrible happened when Moses was
40 years old. It was so bad that he had to run for his very life.
Narrator
#1: We
learn about this in both Exodus 2 and Acts 7. Exodus 2:11
states, "One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his
own people were and watched them at their hard labor."
Narrator #2: Moses "saw an Egyptian beating a
Hebrew, one of his own people."
Narrator
#1: "After
looking in all directions to make sure no one was watching, Moses killed the
Egyptian and hid the body in the sand."
Narrator #2: Acts 7:25 states, "Moses
thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue
them, but they did not."
Narrator
#1: Did
the Hebrews know, at that time, that Moses was actually one of them? Or did
they think he was nothing but a spoiled Egyptian prince?
Narrator #2: The next day, when Moses went out to revisit
his people, he saw two Hebrew men fighting.
Narrator
#1: "Why
are you beating up your friend?" Moses said to the one who had started
the fight. [Exodus 2:13]
Narrator #2: As Acts 7:26 states, Moses tried to
reconcile them by saying, 'Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt
each other?'
Narrator
#1: Did
they appreciate what Moses was trying to do? Absolutely not! Just listen to
what it says in Acts 7:27.
Narrator #2: "But the man who was mistreating the
other pushed Moses aside and said, 'Who
made you ruler and judge over us?"
Narrator
#1: Then
he asked Moses a terrifying question. He asked, "Are you thinking of
killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?"
Narrator #2: Uh-oh! Moses was scared. He realized, "Oh,
no! Everyone knows what I did."
Narrator
#1: And
sure enough, Pharaoh heard what had happened, and he tried to kill Moses.
Narrator #2: But Moses fled from Pharaoh for more than
200 miles and settled in the land of Midian.
Narrator
#1: And
that completes the story of the first 40 years of Moses' life.
Narrator #2: END OF SKIT. Let's give our
