Exodus 13 to 15

Story Highlights:

* God guided Israelites with pillar of cloud by day & pillar of fire by night

* God parted Red Sea so Israelites could cross on dry land

* Parted Red Sea closed on Pharaoh’s army while chasing Israelites

Bible Role-play begins:

Narrator #1: Phew! Pharaoh had finally let Moses, Aaron, and all the thousands of Hebrew slaves go.

Narrator #2: Their journey began in Goshen in Egypt. Their end goal was to travel to Canaan—the land God had promised to give to the descendants of Abraham.

Narrator #1: They could have taken a shortcut to Canaan by traveling through the Philistine territory, but God knew that would not be wise.

Narrator #2: Why was that? The Philistines had strong armies and mighty warriors who would attack, kill, and chase them all the way back to Egypt.

Narrator #1: Instead, God led the Hebrews in a roundabout way through the wilderness, toward the Red Sea.

Narrator #2: How did they know which way to go? The Lord God went ahead of them.

Narrator #1: During the day, God guided them with a pillar of cloud. By night, God guided them with a pillar of fire.

Narrator #2: That way, the Hebrew people could travel safely by day or by night, following every which way the Lord led them.

Narrator #1: The people of Israel set up camp in the wilderness along the shore of a leg of the Red Sea.

Narrator #2: In the meantime, Pharaoh changed his mind. He wanted to get all those Hebrews to return to Egypt to continue being his slaves.

Narrator #1: The Bible tells us that Pharaoh chose 600 of his best chariots, along with the rest of Egypt's chariots, each with its commander.

Narrator #2: At the very least, there were two horses and two or more men per chariot.

Narrator #1: Just imagine how scared the Hebrews were to be trapped between Pharaoh's angry army and the enormous Red Sea.

Narrator #2: The Israelites panicked and cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, "Why did you bring us out here to die? It's better to be a slave in Egypt than a corpse in the wilderness!"

Narrator #1: But Moses told the people, "Don't be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today."

Narrator #2: Moses also said, "The Lord Himself will fight for you. Just stay calm." Then, God said to Moses:

Father God: Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving! Pick up your staff and raise your hand over the sea. Divide the water so the Israelites can walk through the middle of the sea on dry ground. And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will charge in after the Israelites. That way, all Egypt will see my glory and know that I am the Lord!

Narrator #1: Then the angel of God, who had been leading the people of Israel, moved to the rear of the camp. The pillar of cloud also moved from the front and stood behind them.

Narrator #2: The cloud settled between the Egyptian and Israelite camps. As darkness fell, the cloud turned to fire, lighting up the night. That way, the Egyptian army could not get near the Israelites.

Narrator #1: Then Moses raised his hand over the sea, and the Lord opened up a path through the water with a strong east wind. The wind blew all night, turning the seabed into dry land.

Narrator #2: So, the people of Israel walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground, with tall walls of water on each side!

Narrator #1: Then the Egyptians—all of Pharaoh's horses, chariots, and charioteers—chased them into the middle of the sea.

Narrator #2: But just before dawn, the Lord looked down on the Egyptian army from the pillar of fire and cloud, and He threw their forces into total confusion.

Narrator #1: When all the Israelites had reached the other side of the Red Sea, the Lord said this to Moses.

Father God: Raise your hand over the sea again. Then the waters will rush back and cover the Egyptians, their chariots, and charioteers.

Narrator #2: So, as the sun began to rise, Moses raised his hand over the sea, and the water rushed back into its usual place. The Egyptians tried to escape, but the Lord swept them into the sea. Not a single one survived.

Narrator #1: When the people of Israel saw the mighty power that the Lord had unleashed against the Egyptians, they put their faith in the Lord and in His servant Moses.

Narrator #2: To celebrate, Moses and the people of Israel sang a grateful song of praise to the Lord.

Narrator #1: His big sister Miriam took a tambourine and led all the women in a dance as they sang, "Sing to the Lord, for He had triumphed gloriously. He has hurled both horse and rider into the sea."

Narrator #2: END OF SKIT. Let's give our volunteers a great big hand!
