Moses part 5 of 15
Exodus 4 to 6 & Acts 7

Story Highlights:
- * God gave Moses 3 signs to prove God had sent him
- * God allowed older brother Aaron to be his spokesperson since Moses felt inadequate
- * Pharaoh increased their workload & refused to let Hebrew slaves go
Bible role-play begins:
Narrator
#1: As
you heard last week, Moses was nervous about the idea of returning to Egypt to
try to convince Pharaoh to release the Hebrew slaves.
Narrator #2: God showed Moses 3 signs he could do to
demonstrate just a little of God's power to his fellow Hebrews and to Pharaoh.
Narrator
#1: The
first sign was to throw his staff down to the ground. The staff would transform
into a venomous snake. To return it to its original form, Moses was told to
pick the snake up by its tail.
Narrator #2: The second sign was to place his hand inside
his cloak. When he pulled it out, it would be covered with leprosy. Leprosy is
a highly contagious disease in which your skin rots away.
Narrator
#1: To
return his hand to its normal, healthy state, Moses should place his hand
inside his cloak again.
Narrator #2: The third sign was to touch his staff to the
water in the Nile River. The river would turn from water to blood. When he
touched the staff back to the water, it would return to its normal, drinkable
state. Then, God said:
Father God: Perform these signs. Then they will believe that the Lord, the God of their ancestors - the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob - really has appeared to you.
Narrator
#1: Next,
Moses complained, "O Lord, I'm not very good with words. I never have
been, and I'm not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied,
and my words get tangled."
Narrator #2: After some discussion, God came up with a
solution that calmed Moses' nervousness. God said:
Father God: All right. What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he speaks well. And look! He is on his way to meet you now. He will be delighted to see you. Talk to him, and put the words in his mouth. I will be with both of you as you speak, and I will instruct you both in what to do. Aaron will be your spokesman to the people. He will be your mouthpiece, and you will stand in the place of God for him, telling him what to say. And take your shepherd's staff with you, and use it to perform the miraculous signs I have shown you.
Narrator
#1: So,
Moses went back home to Jethro, his father-in-law. "Please let me
return to my relatives in Egypt. I don't even know if they are still alive."
Narrator #2: His father-in-law agreed. Moses then took
his wife and his two sons, and they headed back to the land of Egypt. In his
hand, he carried the staff of God.
Narrator
#1: In
the meantime, God had instructed Aaron to go into the wilderness to meet Moses.
They had not seen each other for 40 years. They hugged and then carefully made
their plans.
Narrator #2: When Moses and Aaron returned to Egypt, they
called all the elders of Israel together, explained what had happened, and
showed them the convincing signs.
Narrator
#1: When
the elders of Israel heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen
their misery, they bowed down and worshiped God.
Narrator #2: Next, Moses and Aaron went and spoke to
Pharaoh.
Narrator
#1: They
told the king of Egypt, "This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Let
my people go so they may hold a festival in my honor in the wilderness."
Narrator #2: "Is that so?" retorted
Pharaoh. "And who is the Lord? Why should I listen to him and let
Israel go? I don't know the Lord, and I will not let Israel go."
Narrator
#1: By
the way, Pharaoh considered himself to be a god. He and his people also
worshiped many false gods, including the sun, the moon, and various animals.
Not one of them worshiped the real God.
Narrator #2: But Aaron and Moses persisted in trying to
convince Pharaoh to let them do this.
Narrator
#1: Pharaoh
refused. That same day, Pharaoh sent this order to the Egyptian slave drivers
and the Israelite foremen: "Do not supply any more straw for making
bricks. Make the people get it themselves!"
Narrator #2: "But still require them to make the
same number of bricks as before. Don't reduce the quota. They are lazy. That's
why they are crying out, 'Let
us go and offer sacrifices to our God.'"
Narrator
#1: "Load
them down with more work. Make them sweat! That will teach them to listen to
lies!"
Narrator #2: The slave drivers and foremen gave the new
orders to the Hebrew slaves. Of course, the slaves could not meet the same
quota, so many of them got whipped.
Narrator
#1: Then,
the Israelite foreman went to Aaron and Moses to complain.
Narrator #2: They said, "May the Lord judge and
punish you for making us stink before Pharaoh and his officials. You have put a
sword into their hands, an excuse to kill us!"
Narrator
#1: Then
Moses went back to the Lord and protested, "Why have you brought all
this trouble on your own people, Lord? Why did you send me?"
Narrator #2: "Ever since I came to Pharaoh as
your spokesman, he has been even more brutal to your people. And you have done
nothing to rescue them!" God replied in this way.
Father God: Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh. When he feels the force of My strong hand, he will let the people go. In fact, he will force them to leave his land!
Narrator
#1: Tune
