Exodus 7 to 8

Story Highlights:

* Moses's staff turned into a poisonous snake that swallowed all the magicians’ snakes

* 1st plague in Egypt - Moses' staff filled Nile River with blood

* 2nd plague - Egypt covered with thousands of frogs

Bible role-play begins:

Narrator #1: The showdown began between Moses and the king of Egypt, known as Pharaoh.

Narrator #2: Moses told Pharaoh that God had ordered him to let the Hebrew slaves go, but Pharaoh just said, "NO! NO! NO!"

Narrator #1: Moses felt discouraged. But God had a fantastic plan involving a miracle followed by 10 plagues. God told Moses:

Father God: Pay close attention to this. I will make you seem like God to Pharaoh, and your brother, Aaron, will be your prophet. Tell Aaron everything I command you, and Aaron must command Pharaoh to let the people of Israel leave his country.

Narrator #2: Moses tried to imagine what words he could say or actions he could take to motivate Pharaoh to change his mind. God then said:

Father God: But I will make Pharaoh's heart stubborn so I can multiply my miraculous signs and wonders in the land of Egypt. Even then, Pharaoh will refuse to listen to you. So I will bring down my fist on Egypt. Then I will rescue my forces—my people, the Israelites—from the land of Egypt with great acts of judgment. When I raise my mighty hand and bring out the Israelites, the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.

Narrator #1: So, 80-year-old Moses and 83-year-old Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded them. They began by throwing that special staff to the ground.

Narrator #2: Instantly, that staff transformed into a poisonous snake, which they called a serpent.

Narrator #1: But Pharaoh was not impressed, especially when his magicians could throw down their staffs and make them transform into serpents, as well.

Narrator #2: Even though Pharaoh was shocked to see Moses' serpent glide over and swallow all his serpents, he continued to say, "NO, you cannot go!"

Narrator #1: So, the next morning, God sent Moses and Aaron back to Pharaoh to report what the Lord their God had said.

Father God: Because you refuse to let My people go, I will show you that I am the Lord. Look! I will strike the water of the Nile with this staff in the hands of Moses, and the river will turn to blood. The fish in it will die, and the river will stink. The Egyptians will not be able to drink any water from the Nile.

Narrator #2: After that, while Pharaoh and all of his officials watched, Aaron raised his staff and struck the water of the Nile River. Suddenly, the whole river turned to blood.

Narrator #1: The fish in the river died. The water became so foul that the Egyptians could not drink it. There was blood everywhere throughout the land of Egypt.

Narrator #2: But Pharaoh's magicians could do the same thing. So Pharaoh said "NO!" and returned to his palace, putting the whole thing out of his mind.

Narrator #1: Then all the Egyptians dug along the riverbank to find drinking water, for they could not drink the bloody water from the Nile River.

Narrator #2: Seven days passed. Since Pharaoh kept saying "NO!", it was time for the second plague.

Narrator #1: Moses and Aaron returned to Pharaoh to report what the Lord their God said next.

Father God: Let my people go so that they can worship me. If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs across your entire land. The Nile River will swarm with frogs. They will come up out of the river and into your palace, even into your bedroom and onto your bed! They will enter the houses of your officials and your people. They will even jump into your ovens and your kneading bowls. Frogs will jump on you, your people, and all your officials.

Narrator #2: Of course, Pharaoh said, "NO!" So Aaron took that staff, raised it in his hands, and pointed it at all the rivers, canals, and ponds of Egypt.

Narrator #1: Instantly, frogs came up and covered the whole land. Pharaoh ordered his magicians to do the same.

Narrator #2: They were also able to point their staffs to make some frogs appear. However, they had no way to make any of the frogs disappear.

Narrator #1: Imagine trying to sleep with frogs crawling all over you, or trying to cook or eat with frogs sitting on your plate or in your pots and pans, or trying to walk with frogs jumping on you.

Narrator #2: After many hours of this, Pharaoh called Moses and said, "Plead with the Lord to take the frogs away from my people and me. I will let your people go so that they can offer sacrifices to the Lord."

Narrator #1: Moses agreed. Moses prayed to God, the frogs died, and a horrible stench filled the land.

Narrator #2: Even so, once the frogs were dead, Pharaoh changed his mind. Once again, he refused to let the people of Israel go.
