Bible tale: Abraham part 2 of 3

Abraham part 2 of 3
from Genesis 12 to 14.
Re-told by Debbie Dunn.




















  • Story Highlights:
    * Due to overcrowding, Lot settled near Sodom, and Abram/Abraham settled in the rest of land of Canaan
    * God blessed Abram’s land. God promised he & Sarai would have more offspring than dust of the earth.
    * Abram led rescue team to free Lot & hostages & gave Melchizedak 10% of all spoils taken in battle



Narrator #1: After much traveling, Abram and his wife Sarai (Sair-eye) had become wealthy. In addition to silver and gold, they owned flocks, herds, livestock, tents, and many possessions.


Narrator #2: Abram thought about settling in an area between Bethel and Ai [ay-eye]. There were two big problems, though.


Narrator #1: The first problem was that other people already lived in this land: the Canaanites [kay-nuh-nites] and the Perizzites [par-izz-ites].


Narrator #2: The second problem was overcrowding. There was not enough food for all of Abraham’s animals plus Lot's flocks, herds, livestock, and tents.


Narrator #1: Fondly, Abram said, "Lot, let's not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives."


Narrator #2: "Is not the whole land before you? Let's part company. If you go to the left, I'll go to the right. If you go to the right, I'll go to the left."


Narrator #1: Selfishly, Lot looked around and chose the best grazing land, which included a river and the whole plain of the Jordan. So, the two groups parted company.


Narrator #2: Little did Lot guess that big trouble would soon be heading his way.


Narrator #1: Lot chose to pitch his tents near Sodom [soh-dəm]. Researchers believe this city was probably 10 to 15 miles from Gomorrah [gə-mor-ruh].


Narrator #2: (This took place a few years before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)


Narrator #1: After Lot left, Almighty God called out to Abram and said:

Father God: Abram, look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see, I will give to you and your offspring forever.


Narrator #2: Please recall that Abram was 75 and Sarai was 65. They both probably wondered how soon this baby would appear.


God text

Father God: I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.


Narrator #1: Genesis 13:18 So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre [mam-ray] at Hebron [heh-bruhn], where he pitched his tents. There, he built an altar to the Lord.


Narrator #2: So, Abram and his group flourished. Sadly, big problems were about to happen to the kings of five countries, including Sodom and Gomorrah.


Narrator #1:: For many years, there had been a war going on between many countries. To summarize, four powerful kings conquered the five kings you see in this illustration.





















Narrator #2: All the people in those five countries, including Lot and his family, were either killed or taken hostage.


Narrator #1: Thankfully, one man managed to escape. He sneaked off and reported to Abram what had happened to his nephew named Lot.


Narrator #2: Abram set up a rescue team of 318 trained men born in his household, plus three siblings from nearby who were his allies.


Narrator #1: Researchers suggest Abram may have had to travel as far as 200 miles to rescue his nephew and many of the other hostages.


Narrator #2: In the area that came to be known as the King's Valley, a very mysterious man came out to greet Abram. His name was Melchizedek [Mel-kih-ZED-ek].


Narrator #1: In the same way, Jesus is our high priest and spiritual king; this man was also a king and a "priest of God Most High."


Narrator #2: He blessed Abram and said, "Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand. "


Narrator #1: Recognizing that God sent this man, Abram gave Melchizedek [Mel-kih-ZED-ek], as a token of gratitude, a tenth of all the spoils he had taken in the battle.


Narrator #2: The king of Sodom next approached Abram. He told Abram to give him back his people, but to keep all the goods they had recovered as a reward.


Narrator #1: Abram said, "My three allies should get their share of the goods, but as for me and my men, I promised Almighty God that I would not take as much as a sandal from you. That way, you could never claim that you made me rich."


Narrator #2: Abram also said, "The only thing my men and I will accept is what my men have eaten."


Narrator #1: So, Abram rescued Lot, who then returned safely to his home in Sodom.





















Narrator #2: Likewise, Abram and his men returned to their homes.
