Bible tale: Lot & the Pillar of Salt

Lot & the Pillar of Salt
from Genesis 18-19
re-told by Debbie Dunn

















  • Story Highlights:
    * Before God destroyed Sodom, 2 angels extracted Lot, his wife, and 2 daughters.
    * Lot's wife disobeyed, looked back at Sodom, & transformed into a pillar of salt.
    * After God destroyed Sodom, Lot & 2 daughters followed angels' advice & settled in cave on mountain.



PART 1


Narrator #1: Hebrews 13, verse 2, states: "Don't forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!"


Narrator #2: We learn in Genesis 18 that the Lord and two men (angels-in-disguise) visited Abraham to share a meal, remind Sarah her long-awaited son would soon be born, and to share a scary secret.


God text

Father God: Abraham, the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great, and their sin is so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me.



Narrator #1: Abraham humbly asked, "Lord, will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? What if there are 50 righteous people in the city? Would you spare the city if you found 50 good people living there?"


Narrator #2: Abraham likely counted his nephew Lot, Lot's wife, and their two daughters as four of those 50 righteous people.


God text

Father God: Okay, Abraham, if I find 50 righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.



Narrator #1: Bravely, Abraham bargained with God and got Him to agree that He would not destroy Sodom if He found as many as 45, then 40, then 30, then 20.


Narrator #2: Abraham even got God to agree that He would not destroy Sodom if they could find just 10 good people living there.




PART 2


Narrator #1: That evening, those two angels-in-disguise arrived at Sodom.


Narrator #2: When Lot looked up from the city's gateway and saw either two well-dressed men or two angels-in-disguise, he bowed down with his face to the ground.


Narrator #1: Lot invited them to come into his house, wash their feet, eat a meal, and spend the night.


Narrator #2: Before bedtime, all the men from every part of the city, both young and old, surrounded the house.


Narrator #1: Those wicked men said, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them."


Narrator #2: Then Lot did something shocking. To protect his guests from those wicked men, he offered to allow them to have their way with his two virgin daughters.


Narrator #1: The men of Sodom refused, as they were only interested in men. They yelled, "Lot, get out of our way! You came here as a foreigner and want to play the judge! We'll treat you worse than them."


Narrator #2: Before breaking down Lot's door, the two angels reached out, pulled Lot back inside the house, and shut it.


Narrator #1: They then struck all those wicked men blind so they could no longer find Lot's door.


Narrator #2: The angels asked Lot, "Do you have any other family in the city, including sons-in-law? If so, get them out of here because we are going to destroy the entire city."


Narrator #1: The angels declared, "The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that He has sent us to destroy it."


Narrator #2: Lot had two sons-in-law who had pledged to marry his daughters. He told them what would happen, but they refused to leave because they thought Lot must surely be joking.


Narrator #1: With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, "Hurry! Flee with your wife and two daughters, or you will be swept away when the city is punished."


Narrator #2: When Lot hesitated, the angels grasped the hands of each of them and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.


Narrator #1: As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, "Flee for your lives! Do not look back! Don't stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!"


Narrator #2: Lot said, "Thank you for your help! Could we go to nearby Zoar instead of the scary mountains?"


Narrator #1: The angels agreed, but they urged them to hurry. By the time Lot and his family reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land.


Narrator #2: Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah out of the heavens. Thus, God overthrew those cities, the entire plain, all the wicked residents, and even the vegetation.


Narrator #1: Tragically, Lot's wife disobeyed the angels' orders not to look back. In punishment, she became a pillar of salt.


Narrator #2: Early the next morning, Abraham looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah. He saw dense smoke rising from the land like a furnace. He probably wondered, "Did Lot and his family survive? "


Narrator #1: Lot and his two daughters decided it would be best to leave Zoar and settle in the mountains, like the two angels had first suggested. They found a cave to live in.


Narrator #2: Luke 17, verse 32 states, "Remember [what happened to] Lot's wife [when she looked back]!"


Narrator #1: After all, other than asking forgiveness for our past sins, we must not turn back to them. We are to let go of our past and live a life pleasing to God.


Narrator #2: END OF SKIT. Let’s give our volunteers a great big hand!
