Bible tale: Abraham part 3 of 3

Abraham part 3 of 3
from Genesis 15 to 17 & Genesis 21:1-7.
Re-told by Debbie Dunn.

  • Story Highlights:
    * When Sarai/Sarah was 75, she told Abram/Abraham to give her a child through Hagar.
    * When pregnant Hagar ran away, Angel of the Lord told her to return & submit to Sarai's authority.
    * Sarah was 90, and Abraham was 100 when their son Isaac was born.

PART 1

Narrator #1: My name is Sarai (Sair-eye). When I was 65, Almighty God promised my husband, Abram, that he and I would have a child.

Narrator #2: When I was 75, Abram had a vision. Almighty God repeated this promise. He even said that our offspring would match the number of the stars in the sky.

Narrator #1: Abram was willing to wait patiently on the Lord. But me - I like to try to make things happen.

Narrator #2: Impulsively, I told Abram he should take my Egyptian slave, Hagar [Hay-gaar], as his wife. If she gets pregnant, then her child could become like mine.

Narrator #1: Abram agreed. I was pleased when she got pregnant almost right away. I didn't count on how much her attitude toward me would change.

Narrator #2: I said to Abram, "This is all your fault! I put my servant into your arms, but now that she's pregnant, she constantly disrespects me. The Lord will show who's wrong—you or me!"

Narrator #1: Abram calmly said, "Look, she is your servant, so deal with her as you see fit."

Narrator #2: I treated her so harshly that pregnant Hagar ran away. Was I sorry to see her go? No, I was not!

PART 2

Narrator #1: Out in the wilderness, the angel of the Lord found Hagar by a spring of water.

Narrator #1: The angel of the Lord also said to her, "You are now pregnant and will give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael [Ish-maal] (which means 'God hears'), for the LORD has heard your cry of distress."

Narrator #2: The angel continued, "This son of yours will be a wild man, as untamed as a wild donkey! He will raise his fist against everyone, and everyone will be against him. Yes, he will live in open hostility against all his relatives."

Narrator #1: Genesis 16:13 Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the LORD, who had spoken to her. She said, "You are the God who sees me." She also said, "Have I truly seen the One who sees me?" (NLT)

Narrator #2: So, Hagar returned to Sarai and gave 86-year-old Abram a son. Abram named the baby Ishmael.

PART 3

Narrator #1: Thirteen years passed. When Abram was 99, God repeated His promise that they would have a child.

God text

Father God: I am El-Shaddai - 'God Almighty.' Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life. I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to give you countless descendants.

Narrator #2: At this, Abram fell face down on the ground. Then God said to him:

God text

Father God: This is my covenant, my promise, with you: I will make you the father of a multitude of nations! What's more, I am changing your name. It will no longer be Abram. Instead, you will be called Abraham, for you will be the father of many nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful. Your descendants will become many nations, and kings will be among them!

Narrator #1: Among other promises, God gave Abraham some news regarding his wife. Father God said:

God text

Father God: Your wife's name will no longer be Sarai. From now on, her name will be Sarah. And I will bless her and give you a son from her! Yes, I will bless her richly, and she will become the mother of many nations. Kings of nations will be among her descendants.

Narrator #2: As Abraham bowed to the ground, he inwardly laughed at the thought that he, at age 100, and Sarah, at age 90, would finally become parents.

Narrator #1: When God had finished speaking, He left Abraham. So, after twenty-five years of waiting, it would finally happen.

PART 4

Narrator #2: Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born.

Narrator #1: Ninety-year-old Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me. Surprisingly, I have borne Abraham a son in his old age."

Narrator #2: END OF SKIT. Let’s give our volunteers a great big hand!
