Bible tale: Moses role-play - part 12 of 15

 Moses part 12 of 15

Exodus 17 to 20

re-told by Debbie Dunn

Story Highlights:

* Israelites winning Amalekite battle only while Moses raised God’s staff

* Aaron helped hold God’s staff aloft when Moses’ arm grew tired

* Moses dictated 10 commandments before stone tablets were carved

Bible role-play begins:

Narrator #1: After about two months of the Children of Israel wandering in the wilderness, they were attacked by a group of people called the warriors of the Amalekites [uh-MAL-uh-kites].

Narrator #2: So, Moses called for Joshua who served as his assistant and military commander. Moses said:

MOSES: Joshua, choose men for us and go out and fight against the warriors of the Amalekites [uh-MAL-uh-kites]. I will station myself on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.

Narrator #1: As long as Moses kept the staff of God raised in the air, the Children of Israel were winning the battle.

Narrator #2: But after a while, Moses' arms got so tired that he could no longer hold up the staff of God.

Narrator #1: As soon as he lowered the staff to rest his arms, the Children of Israel began losing the battle. The Ringleaders called out:

RINGLEADER #1: Oh, no!

(Group Repeats)

We're losing the battle!

(Group Repeats)

RINGLEADER #2: Moses! Moses!

(Group Repeats)

Hold up that staff of God!

(Group Repeats)

Narrator #2: Quickly, Aaron and Hur found a stone for Moses to sit on. Then they stood on either side of him and helped him keep the staff of God raised up in the air.

Narrator #1: They had to do that until sunset. Thankfully, due to God's help, the Children of Israel won this first battle.

Narrator #2: The Chant Leaders led the people in thanking and praising God.

CHANT LEADER #1: God is our protector!

 (Group Repeats)

CHANT LEADER #2: God is so very good!

 (Group Repeats)

Thank you, God!

 (Group Repeats)

Narrator #1: In the 3rd month, the Children of Israel came to the Desert of Sinai next to the mountain where Moses first saw the Burning Bush.

Narrator #2: During the 11 or more months they stayed there, Moses made a few trips up that mountain to speak with God.

Narrator #1: On his first trip up Mt. Sinai, God gave Moses this message to tell the Children of Israel.

Father God: This is what you are to say to the people of Israel: 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations, you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.'

Narrator #2: Moses came down the mountain and told them what God had said. The Chant Leaders and people said:

CHANT LEADER #1: We will do everything ... .

(Group Repeats)

CHANT LEADER #2: ... the Lord has said.

(Group Repeats)

Narrator #1: During one of his early trips up the mountain, God told Moses that He would speak to the people in 3 days.

Narrator #2: The Children of Israel were to wash their clothes as part of preparing themselves for this visit.

Narrator #1: On the morning of the third day, there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast.

Narrator #2: Everyone in the camp trembled. Keeping a safe distance, they carefully crept near enough to the bottom of the mountain to hear God's words.

Narrator #1: With a loud voice, God then dictated the 10 commandments, or laws, that they should follow.

Narrator #2: The Chant Leaders and Ringleaders will lead you in repeating each law.

CHANT LEADER #1: Only worship God!

(Group repeats)

CHANT LEADER #2: Do not worship idols.

(Group Repeats)

RINGLEADER #1: Treat God’s name with respect.

(Group Repeats)

RINGLEADER #2: Keep the Sabbath Day holy.

(Group Repeats)

CHANT LEADER #1: Honor your parents.

(Group Repeats)

CHANT LEADER #2: Do not murder people.

(Group Repeats)

RINGLEADER #1: Be faithful in marriage.

(Group Repeats)

RINGLEADER #2: Do not steal.

(Group Repeats)

CHANT LEADER #1: Do not lie.

(Group Repeats)

CHANT LEADER #2: Do not envy or crave what

        belongs to others.

(Group Repeats)

Narrator #1: The people were so scared of hearing God's voice, they had the Ringleaders beg:

RINGLEADER #1: Moses, from now on, you tell us what God says, and we will listen.

RINGLEADER #2: But do not have God speak to us again, because we fear we will die.

Narrator #2: So, from that time forward, God spoke only to Moses, who faithfully shared all the words God said to him.

END OF SKIT. Let's give our volunteers a great big hand!
