Exodus 33 to 40

Story Highlights:

* A punishing plague was 1 consequence of worshiping golden calf

* Israelites learned to only worship God rather than false idols

* Moses returned up Mt. Sinai to carve 10 commandments on 2 stone tablets

Bible role-play begins:

Narrator #1: After Moses' return from the top of Mt. Sinai, when he burnt and ground up that golden false idol calf, the Children of Israel felt afraid.

Narrator #2: First, Moses had poured the gold powder into water and forced them to drink it, digest it, and poop out that false god.

Narrator #1: Second, some of the Ringleaders, those noisy troublemakers, had either gotten very sick or died in that punishing plague.

Narrator #2: Third, God Himself made this startling announcement to the Children of Israel:

Father God: Go up to this land that flows with milk and honey. But I will not travel among you, for you are a stubborn and rebellious people. If I did, I would surely destroy you along the way.

Narrator #1: When the people heard these stern words, they went into mourning and stopped wearing their jewelry and fine clothes.

Narrator #2: Many of them began to comprehend that they had to make a choice. EITHER, they could align themselves with the Chant Leaders who tried to lead them into doing what is right and good.

Narrator #1: OR, they could continue to rebel by aligning themselves with the Ringleaders who tried to peer-pressure them into going against God's 10 commandments.

Narrator #2: In the same way, each of us has to make that choice daily. Will we say and do what is right?

Narrator #1: OR, will we rebel by going against our conscience, by saying and doing what we know to be wrong, mean, hurtful, or cruel?

Narrator #2: Nevertheless, even though God was angry with the Children of Israel for daring to break His first two commandments, He still provided plenty of water to drink and manna bread to eat.

Narrator #1: In other words, just like a parent who might punish you when you act in ways that are not appropriate, God never stops pouring out His everlasting Love, with a capital L, for each of us - no matter what we have thought, said, or done.

Narrator #2: Who recalls the wording of the first commandment? (Answer listed at end of this role-play)

Narrator #1: Who recalls the wording of the second commandment? (Answer listed at end of this role-play)

Narrator #2: One day, Moses prayed to God and said these very words.

MOSES: Lord, if it is true that you look favorably on me, remember that this nation is your very own people.

Father God: All right, Moses. I will personally go with you and everything will be fine for you.

MOSES: Lord, if you don't personally go with us, don't make us leave this place. Otherwise, how will anyone know that you look favorably on your people and on me—if you don't go with us? Your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.

Father God: Moses, I will indeed do what you have asked, for I look favorably on you, and I know you by name.

Narrator #1: Then God told Moses to chisel out two new stone tablets and return to the top of Mt. Sinai.

Narrator #2: This time, when Moses left for another 40 days and 40 nights, no one dared to be a negative Ringleader while Moses was gone.

Narrator #1: At the end of that time, Moses returned with the stone tablets listing the 10 commandments.

Narrator #2: Moses was not aware that his face glowed. His big brother Aaron and the people of Israel felt afraid. Moses said to them:

MOSES: Don't be afraid. It is me, Moses. The Lord our God has given us directions for creating a Tabernacle tent that will be our place to worship Him. Almighty God has also given us a set of 613 rules to follow, including the 10 commandments. As long as we do our best to follow God's directions, He will be our God, and we will be His special people.

Narrator #1: When Moses finished speaking with them, he covered his face with a veil. He would only uncover his glowing face when he returned to speak with the Lord.

Narrator #2: For quite some time, the people of Israel followed all of the Lord's instructions to Moses. As a result, Moses and God were pleased with their efforts.
