Exodus 19 to 32

Story Highlights:
* At top of Mt Sinai – God gave Moses 10 commandments.
* Israelites ordered Aaron to carve them a golden calf to worship in place of God.
* Israelites gave carved idol credit for miracles instead of God.
Bible role-play begins:
Narrator
#1: Sometime
during the 3rd month after leaving Egypt, God gave Moses this direction.
Father God: Come up to me on the mountain for a long visit. During that time, I will give you the tablets of stone listing the 10 commandments. I will also give you other laws and rules to teach the Children of Israel.
Narrator #2: As you know, God had already narrated the 10
commandments to all the Children of Israel.
Narrator
#1: But
in case they forgot or were not really listening, they would now have those
laws in writing.
Narrator #2: Before Moses left to climb up Mt. Sinai, he
said this to the Israelites.
MOSES: Wait here for me
until I come back to you. If you have any problems while I am gone, you can
talk with either of the two men who helped me hold up the staff of God during
the recent battle: Aaron, my older brother, or Hur, one of my trusted
assistants.
Narrator
#1: Not
even Moses knew that he would be on that mountain for 40 days and 40
nights.
Narrator #2: In silence, the Children of Israel watched
Moses walk up that mountain covered with a cloud.
Narrator
#1: Within
days, they saw the top of the mountain look like it might have been on fire.
Narrator #2: During the long time Moses was gone, all
kinds of horrible mischief took place.
Narrator
#1: The
Ringleaders, those noisy troublemakers, likely were the first to start the
negative rumors.
RINGLEADER #1: Moses has been gone for more than 5 weeks.
(Group
Repeats)
RINGLEADER #2: Perhaps Moses is
hurt or dead.
(Group Repeats)
RINGLEADER #1: What if Moses
never comes back?
(Group Repeats)
RINGLEADER #2: Who will watch
over us then?
(Group Repeats)
Narrator #2: Aaron, Hur, or the Chant Leaders might have
tried to keep everybody calm.
CHANT LEADER #1: Even though Moses
is gone, ...
(Group Repeats)
CHANT LEADER #2: ... God still
sends Manna every day.
(Group Repeats)
CHANT LEADER #1: God is our
provider!
(Group Repeats)
CHANT LEADER #2: God is good!
(Group Repeats)
Narrator
#1: Uh-oh!
Those Ringleaders came up with a plan that would break the first 2 of God's 10
Commandments.
RINGLEADER #1: Aaron, we want
you to make us a god to lead us.
RINGLEADER #2: Yeah! The
Egyptians worshiped many gods. Just like them, we want a god we can see and
touch.
Narrator #2: The Chant Leaders tried to remind them that
doing this would break the first two commandments.
CHANT LEADER #1: Obey God's 1st
commandment.
(Group Repeats)
CHANT LEADER #2: God told us only
to worship Him!
(Group Repeats)
CHANT LEADER #1: Obey God's 2nd
commandment.
(Group Repeats)
CHANT LEADER #2: God told us not
to worship idols.
(Group Repeats)
Narrator
#1: Sadly,
the Ringleaders ignored them. They wanted to copy the Egyptians, their former
masters, by worshiping a false idol.
Narrator #2: It's hard to believe that Aaron would agree
to give in to their demands. Perhaps he was too afraid to say NO. Aaron
said:
AARON: Take off all your
gold earrings and bring them to me.
Narrator
#1: Quickly,
the people took off their earrings and gave them to Aaron to melt down to make
a golden calf.
Narrator #2: Afterward, the Ringleaders gave the golden calf all the credit for bringing them out of Egypt, parting the Red Sea, and giving them water to drink and Manna to eat every single day.
Narrator
#1: Aaron,
Hur, or the Chant Leaders were likely too afraid to question how troublemakers
could believe a newly-crafted calf made of gold had any power to do the things
that only God can do.
Narrator #2: The faithful people might even have hidden
in their tents to pray to God to send Moses back to them as quickly as
possible.
Narrator
#1: Seeing
the Ringleaders satisfaction in having a false idol to worship, Aaron built an
altar in front of the golden calf. Then, Aaron said:
AARON: Tomorrow, we will
celebrate with a festival. We will eat, drink, and dance.
Narrator #2: Tune in next week to see what Moses and the
real God, our only God, decided to do to these disobedient and rebellious
Children of Israel.
